In October 2017, a routine mammogram revealed Brenda Thompson had stage 1 breast cancer. After going through the motions of radiation and a lumpectomy, Brenda was told by her traditional oncologist that she wouldn’t need anything else and continued to receive the “all-clear” at her regular follow-up visits — until three years later, when a longer than average stomach bug prompted a CT scan that would change everything overnight…
A Devastating Development
Three years after her original diagnosis and recovery, when an average stomach bug stuck around longer than usual, Brenda made her way to a walk-in clinic for support, never suspecting she was about to receive another cancer diagnosis. Yet when she told the clinic doctor her symptoms, a CT scan revealed the unthinkable: a substantial tumor on Brenda’s liver. Her traditional oncologist ordered a liver biopsy, confirming Brenda’s worst fears. The cancer had spread not only to her liver but to her lungs and lymph nodes as well. Brenda had gone from “all-clear” to stage 4 breast cancer, seemingly overnight.
“I really thought it was over for me, because of the way the oncologist presented it. It was just so matter-of-fact… ‘yes you have it in your liver, and your lungs, and your lymph nodes.’ I thought I was surely going to die.”
Stepping Back to Move Forward
Still in shock from the news of her whirlwind diagnosis, Brenda immediately felt her doctors were pressuring her to make several urgent decisions before she even had a chance to process what had happened.
“Suddenly I was being ushered to start this pill and then go on that pill. I was never even told it was chemotherapy… It was very hard to digest, but I knew there had to be another way.”
Taking a step back from the pressure, Brenda consulted with her husband and the two began to research their options, eventually leading them to Hope4Cancer Treatment Centers. After taking time to conduct thorough research, attend several of our educational webinars, and pray about her decision, Brenda made her way to Hope4Cancer Cancun, confident that she was making the best treatment decision for her.
