However, delivered in IV format, Vitamin C acts as a pro-oxidant. When absorbed inside cancer cells it produces hydrogen peroxide that can cause oxidative damage and cell death. Cancer cells are deficient in catalase, an enzyme abundantly present in healthy cells that renders hydrogen peroxide harmless by breaking it down. To accomplish this anti-cancer benefit, large quantities are needed in each dose.
