The History of Toxins

Natural, holistic medicine has a long and robust history, dating all the way back to the fourth century B.C. The Greek physician Hippocrates, who today is known as the “Father of Medicine,” was the first to advocate natural remedies and holistic approaches. Many of today’s holistic and alternative practices date back to the findings of Hippocrates and the ancient Greeks. But detoxification as part of alternative medicine has a shorter history. Why? Detoxification is a modern alternative cancer treatment because toxins themselves are a modern phenomenon. To fully understand detoxification, let’s explore toxins themselves.

Defining detoxification

The term “detoxification” has become common in today’s society, and it generally refers to weight loss, addiction recovery, or a solution for numerous nonspecific ailments. The clinical definition of detoxification is less vague. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry defines detoxification as “the process of removing a poison or toxin or the effect of either from an area or individual.” But try to research the history of detoxification and you’ll likely come up short.

Detoxification is a relatively recent treatment — because continuous exposure to dangerous toxins is a modern challenge. In other words, the history of detoxification begins with the history of toxins themselves. Consider this: the vast majority of toxins that bring about adverse health effects simply did not exist for much of human history!

Toxins due to Global Industrialization

The history of toxins begins at the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution (during the 18th and 19th centuries) marked a shift towards mass production. By the mid-19th century, industrialization was well-established throughout the western part of Europe and America’s northeastern region. The United States had become the world’s leading industrial nation by the early 20th century.

Global industrialization continued from there. Advances were abundant in the fields of manufacturing, transportation, mass production and technology. Of course, many of these industrial innovations were good for our society. Industrialization heightened agricultural and manufacturing output, leading to greater efficiency. Urbanization increased, and today’s modern cities would simply not exist without industrialization. Furthermore, access to information and resources has never been stronger.

Toxins in modern day

While we can’t dismiss the positive impacts of industrialization, the exponential rise in toxins is a clear and negative side effect. Due to global industrialization over the past century, toxins in our environment have increased exponentially. Exposure to persistent bioaccumulative toxicants — that’s PBTs for short — is a modern phenomenon. PBTs are associated with numerous negative health effects, from endocrine disruption and reproductive effects to cardiovascular diseases and, yes, cancer.

These chemicals include organochlorine pesticides, phthalates, bisphenol A, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers. More than 80,000 chemicals are registered for use today in the United States, with an estimated 2,000 debuting on the market every year. Of these chemicals, many have not been studied for adverse health effects.

Why detoxify?

Industrial chemicals are present in our air, our water and food. Toxins also accumulate in our bodies from the incomplete breakdown of unhealthy foods and excessive food consumption. This includes processed carbohydrates, red meats and artificial ingredients — all elements of the modern, processed and unhealthy diet. Furthermore, our body accumulates toxins from foods that are incompatible with a healthy body; think alcohol, caffeine, sugary desserts and salty snacks.

When toxins build up in our bodies, they can contribute to cancer — this is why detoxification is such a key element at Hope4Cancer. At Hope4Cancer, we utilize these detoxification therapies in our holistic approach to healing:

    1. As you know, green tea is loaded with powerful antioxidants that prevent free radical damage and protect the immune system. However, if you have prostate or any cancer, we advise you to seek professional care since just changing a few dietary habits will not be enough.
