Pituitary Cancer

What is the pituitary gland?

The pituitary gland produces and secretes a hormone used to regulate metabolism and growth. It is the main gland of your endocrine system, and is only the size of a pea. The pituitary gland is located at the base of your brain.

What is pituitary cancer?

Although benign tumors of the pituitary gland are common, malignant cancers that develop in the pituitary gland are rare. The cause of this type of cancer is unknown, but is most commonly diagnosis in people older than 65 years of age.

Signs and symptoms of pituitary cancer

Signs and symptoms of pituitary cancer will vary depending on the size of the tumor and the potential to push on surrounding tissues of the brain. Symptoms could include:

  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulty with vision

Traditional treatment options for pituitary cancer

Treatment options for cancer of the pituitary gland could include surgical removal of the cancer. This removal can be achieved through a cut in the nasal passage, or through a cut in the front of the skull commonly referred to as a craniotomy. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy may be considered an option for some pituitary cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for pituitary cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.

Death and mortality statistics for pituitary cancer
