What is the pharynx?

The pharynx is a tube-like passageway, about 5 inches long, and is often referred to as the throat. The purpose of the pharynx is to allow air and food to pass to the trachea and esophagus.

What is pharyngeal cancer?

Cancer of the pharynx is an uncommon cancer and is generally diagnosed as a malignant tumor in the passageway that leads from the back of the nose to the esophagus.

Risk factors for this cancer include heavy smoking, and heavy consumption of alcohol. This cancer is more common in men than in women. This cancer can occur in the upper, mid, or bottom region of the pharynx.

Signs and symptoms of pharyngeal cancer

Individual with pharyngeal cancer (cancer of the pharynx) can have different signs and symptoms based on stage and location of cancer. This cancer tends to grow silently and is not usually diagnosed until later stage. Symptoms could include:

  • Hoarseness / sore throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Coughing up phlegm with bloody discharge

Traditional treatment options for pharyngeal cancer

Although not often indicated for pharyngeal cancer, surgery can be used to control small cancer lesions. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy may be considered an option for some pharyngeal cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for pharyngeal cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.
