Esophageal cancer is a serious disease that usually initiates in the tissues of the inner layer of your esophagus. Risk factors could include smoking, heavy consumption of alcohol, and acid reflux.

Signs and symptoms of esophageal cancer

Most commonly signs and symptoms of esophageal cancer will occur late in the disease process. Symptoms could include:

  • Weight loss
  • Pain or difficulty swallowing
  • Painful hiccups
  • Heartburn
  • Hoarseness / persistent cough

Traditional treatment options for esophageal cancer

Esophageal cancer is often diagnosed in advanced stages, thereby limiting treatment options. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy

  • Laser therapy

Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some esophageal cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size.
