What is melanoma?

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that can originate from a mole. This cancer is most curable in its early stage, however once it has spread, the cure rate is greatly reduced. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and is usually found on sun-exposed parts of the body.

Signs and symptoms of melanoma

Melanomas can vary in their appearance. The first sign of a melanoma can be a change in an existing mole such as, color, shape, size, or texture. Symptoms could include:

  • Asymmetry - the shape of one half of the mole does not match the other half
  • Border - ragged, blurred, or irregular in outline
  • Color - mole may be uneven in color and can include black, brown, tan, white, gray, pink, or blue
  • Diameter - an increase in size, larger than 5 mm

Traditional treatment options for melanoma

Treatment for melanoma depends on the type and stage of the disease. Traditional treatments usually begin with the removal of skin lesions. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Amputation

Radiation therapy may be an option for some melanoma patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for melanoma that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.

  • Over 8,000 deaths will be attributed to melanoma this year
  • The 5 year survival rate for people diagnosed with melanoma is approximately 85%
