Anal cancer

What is Anal Cancer?

Anal cancer is a rare disease that forms in the tissues of the anus. The anus is the opening of the rectum that leads to the lower end of the intestines. This part of the digestive system helps fecal matter exit from the body while removing water and nutrients from food. Anal cancer is a rare and is most commonly found in men and women over the age of 50. Smoking and diets high in fat and low in fiber have been found to attribute to anal cancer.

Signs and Symptoms of Anal Cancer

A large number of people with anal cancer have no symptoms. Symptoms could include:

  • Warts, sores, or bumps on the anus or genitals
  • Itching in the area of the anus
  • Open sores in the area of the anus
  • Discharge or bleeding from the anus
  • Pain or discomfort arising from the area of the anus

Traditional Treatment Options for Anal Cancer

Conventional therapies for anal cancer could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may also suggest:

  • Surgery - performed to remove tumors of the anus and prevent possible complications such as bleeding and bowel blockage.
  • Intra-Arterial Chemotherapy - high doses of chemotherapy are delivered directly to anal cancer tumors.
  • Fractionated Dose Chemotherapy - smaller doses of chemotherapy are delivered over several days.

Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some anal cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for anal cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.
